Last Lagos Day…

We expected three weeks staying in one place to feel like a long time. However, betwen having dear friends visiting and not-so-dear covid visiting, time disappeared quickly! Thursday May 2, was our last day in Lagos and The Algarve. We scurried around trying to see some things we’d missed, but of course we’ve really only scratched the surface of The Algarve anyway. Ahh.. next time!

First task- Jesse drove down to Sagres to visit the point & fort (Fortaleza de Sagres) that Savitri and Christine had visited already (and Penny as well).

I was underwhelmed by the museum (basically a simple multimedia presentation of widely available info with no actual artifacts). The slavery graphics hit home though.. although the graphic certainly downplays the power of the finer print. “..Once the Portuguese had developed the slave trade..” Portugal owns its dark history better than say.. present-day southern US does, but it’s still not as prominent as it should be.

Meanwhile looking out off the edge of the world.. the view never gets old. I can only imagine the view through the eyes of people who rarely would even get there to behold this sight.. and over 500+ years ago not knowing everything we know now.

The views along the coast continue to blow my mind.

I hurried back to Lagos and picked up the girls to go to lunch at Fortaleza da Luz.

Meanwhile the girl’s were doing some last minute shopping, getting a coffee and pastel de nata for Christine (addict!).

The veal was amazing with a blue cheese sauce that was strong without being bitter.. very tasty! Don’t let grilled chicken sound simple- Portugal is know for Piri Piri sauce and unlike some others we tried, this was nicely marinated so it was flavorful with a little kick. Sea Bass (and Sea Bream, aka Dorado) are super popular in Portugal so common dishes. They are cooked and flavored simply but deliciously and we approve!

On our way home we timed it right to catch Praia dos Estudantes at low tide (using the Lagos tides chart from this cool global site). What a great treat seeing the rock formations up close and clambered around as the waves reached for us!

Flowers we saw on the path to the arch ….

Back to the apartment and I worked while Savitri and Christine shopped then packed. We were happy to see the conclusion of my covid fun too!

During my dinner gap we walked into Lagos and ate burgers at Illicit Burgers. They are a bagel shop in hte mornings and burger shop at night, with a little sign that slides back and forth to undcover the function at any time. They do very little table service, so are very busy with delivery people and pick-up customers. While we were there they were mostly the young, drunk, talkative type.

We of course got gelato on the way back to the apartment 😉

Bye Sea La Vie in Lagos ….
