Wandering Old San Juan

Today was a relaxed day wandering the streets of Old San Juan. Once again we stumbled out of our air-conditioned cocoon into the warm tropical mist. We absolutely love our location, half a block off of Calle Santo Cristo (known locally as just “Calle Cristo”), the heart of the area. We are a 1 min walk away but tucked away quiet and peaceful.

Experimenting a bit- here’s a picture I took yesterday right next to where we’re staying, but wasn’t technically ready to include it until now. It’s taken with an Insta360 x4 camera, which captures a full sphere at 72MP. You can click and drag it around in any direction. This isn’t the most exciting scene for it, but I have to start somewhere!

Surprising nobody, here’s the next in a long line of paving stone pix. Read here about the back story. I particularly like the fractured, broken, and partially missing stones for some reason.

We saw the big tree in the center of town (fake, but impressively realistic at least from a distance!). It has quite the following among pigeons, and later in the day we saw a few humans admiring it as well.

On our way to breakfast we constantly peek into doorways and alleys as there are often little architectural oddities. This glimpse of an inner sanctum with tons of potential caught a few our eyes.

If anybody other than me is into stereo pairs, here’ s one of those. It’s subtle, but I find really separates the grid in front from the shrinking doorways in the background.

We went to Kaffe Haus for breakfast. They serve breakfast,, brunch, and lunch, and the line between them is soft so we mixed freely. Pork dumplings for a starter proved to be delicious. As a dumpling fanatic this was a great discovery!

Sweet pork dumplings

We got a benedict, two omelettes, and.. lightly seared sesame tuna. This last one felt like a dinner meal but it struck me as a unique combination and a fun change-up for breakfast.

In the middle is the blueberry-habanero hot sauce, a house specialty. I always like to try sauces with my food, especially breakfast, so this was a nice treat. Blueberry-habanero didn’t sound promising honestly, but the tuna was a perfect vehicle. Release some egg yolk into the mix et voila! Here was the hot sauce plate after our meal, guess which one was mine..

Classic Calle Cristo sights..

Aww come on, somebody must be planting these stones to tempt me!

Savitri chilling on a post overlooking the hill down to the marina.

We have seen very few cats. This serene alley/staircase was ruled by them though. We felt. sort of intrusive, but they let us pass.

I will say that the cats have amazing views. These streetlights just beg to be photographed.

All within a stone’s throw of our rental..

For dinner we went to a very nice Argentine restaurant, El Viejo Almacén. The food was WOW.

The best of company!

We were SOOO good sharing one dessert after dinner that we.. rewarded ourselves by having another round of gelato across the street afterward!

I love reading your blog, but I can’t do it when I’m hungry!! Too much good food. Nice photos, though. Do you all take photos or is it mostly Jesse or Savitri??

      Jesse

We share an iCloud photos album for the trip so that all of us can contribute. Probably ~80% of photos are mine as a result.
