This morning we drove 15 minutes to the west to the small village of Barão de São João. We drove up through the classic European one-lane bi-directional streets to a trailhead for Pedra do Galo. I say “a” because after walking up a large dirt road to the top of the hill we discovered that many people drive there.. and they’ve created another trailhead with restrooms and parking. Oh well, free exercise!

We hike/walked the ~4 mile lollipop trail, which wound through all sorts of trees and shrubs. Tucked in along the trail were all sorts of faces and poems carved into rocks.

At the top of the hill, windmills came into sight. We had seen them in the distance as we drove but they were obscured until they peeked over the trees ahead. They are amazingly large and never fail to impress us in our travels.

It’s just so nice to be out amongst the trees and wildflowers.. not a person in sight. It was warm with a gentle breeze and birds chirping while butterflies drifted by. ..and us crunching through like a couple ogres.

One thing you might notice we didn’t take any pictures of is… the actual Pedra do Galo limestone menhir. Yeah… we missed that. There were big stones all over the place and we didn’t see any special signs so.. we must have walked on by!
We drove back to Lagos a new way along the coast and got groceries at Lidl before returning to the apartment. We’re getting a good sense of where everything is and of course Apple Maps + CarPlay helps a ton!
Once we got back we walked back into Lagos.. after a short wait for the pedestrian drawbridge.

We wandered the beautiful old cobblestone streets again (never gets old!), and allegedly snuck in some gelato at Crema di Gelato.

Since snacking hiking is exhausting, we found ourselves in front of a Thai massage place, Nuad Thai.

We hydrated at a nearby cafe then got head/shoulder/back/neck massages and foot massages. Ahhhh.. we are thinking that all hikes should be followed by massages!
We then wander-routed our way to dinner at Nah Nah Bah, reputed to have the best burgers in Lagos and on the list of top burgers in the world. On the way, as always, we saw lots of street art and cool shops.

Nah Nah Bah proved to be excellent. It’s sort of Jamaican-American themed, with amusing menu descriptions, hot sauces, and reggae music pulsing. We had a great meal and a great time talking with the waiters.

Heading back across the city, more street art!

WhooOOAHHH! is that homemade gelato we haven’t tried?! We had to stop and fix that.. Pinocchio Gelateria! The owner was super nice and told us of his world travels and experiences creating the best gelato. He’s a Frenchman from Toulouse and encouraged us to visit there. He also praised Seville and Rome above all over cities. He thinks gelato originates in Bologna.. we’ve heard Firenze (Florence).. but they’re nearby so we can call it a match. He let me try his coffee flavor and it is perfect. He makes every flavor himself and all with pure ingredients. We will be back!
